While Deccan won a competition skiing nearby in Rajasthan 2009 final – and generally won a tournament that has been edge headquarters for the most recent weeks. (of course there will usually match fixing claims doing the rounds)
I have already said in previous articles that we should not be too surprised that years down the table is the winner of this year. They have the player of the tournament (Adam Gilchrist), the winner of the CAP purple (RP Singh), the Under 23 player of the tournament (Rohit Sharma) and the X factor winners Symonds and Gibbs.
In fact, in an ironic twist of Deccan Chargers today presented total working team with everybody trying to do their part when the Bangalore Royal Challengers tried to move the individualism factor X (Van de Merwe, Dravid, Taylor tried to close it all as hero by staying just around would have seen their homes). But there will be one million and – I wanted to ask another question.
Manufactured IPL format needs a change – Is this really the best team win? Even if you adjust for the finals and semifinals, Deccan Chargers will end with 18 points. Two small points Delhi, with an extra match and a delivery rate worst net. Their scorecard cons Delhi IPL is 2-1 in favor of Delhi. (Actually 2-0 for VS Deccan Delhi and 0-1 for Delhi vs. Adam Gilchrist). Do not sound quite right. You would argue that this is true for all major competitions, including the cricket itself. Yes, is true, however, these leagues are not as elaborate as this one – or 8 teams playing 14 games each. It is one thing to have 2 groups 3-5 games each and a knock-out stage and another is to play lots of games and then turning the result of a bad day. Take a look at the grid points on rel = "nofollow" href = "http://www.thecricketnation.com"> http://www.thecricketnation.com understand the above figures.
The English Premier League, which also has 20 teams and each played 38 games DO NOT have a semifinal and final. The team with the most points wins. Well, the downside of this stimulus is less and may be useful if a team is too strong, but a fairer result.
How about an alternative option?
Each IPL team plays each other just once (so 7 games instead of 14). I do not think Home and Away argument – after all, we played a tournament together, far from home
teams top 4 are then in a semi-final of the League, where they will compete once (or twice even if necessary). Then the first two game of a best of 3 final.
On the practical level as well – as the number of franchises increased, it will be difficult to have teams play each other twice unless of course the T-20 becomes the only form of cricket!
I do not think it will maximize the chances of the best team wins while maintaining the total number of games played in the same range. I hope we can make this change happen for IPL 2010. Till then lets enjoy the T-20 World Cup in June in England.
